2010 ICT Host Call

Significant changes from the 2009 host requirements are indicated in red.

National Academic Quiz Tournaments, LLC, is pleased to announce that it is now accepting bids from colleges, universities, community colleges, hotels, convention centers, and other institutions to host the Intercollegiate Championship Tournament (ICT) in the 2009-2010 competition year.

The ICT will be held the weekend of April 9-11, 2010, but the exact dates used by the tournament (i.e., Friday/Saturday, Saturday-only, or Saturday/Sunday) have not been determined. Interested hosts should e-mail hosting@naqt.com by June 30, 2009, to indicate their desire to host.

Factors that NAQT will consider in making the decision include:

  • Enthusiasm of the club and its institution
  • Experience of the club and its institution
  • Availability of moderators, scorekeepers, and other officials in the area. ICT hosts are not required to provide any trained moderators or scorekeepers for the tournament, but being able to provide experienced staff would be a major asset to an ICT bid.
  • Availability of convenient buildings. We would prefer to not split either division across multiple buildings; ideally, the entire tournament would be a single building, but we would consider a site that had all of Division I in one building and all of Division II in a different (but nearby) building to be nearly as good.
  • Proximity to a major airport
  • Availability and convenience of hotel rooms. In this context, "convenience" principally consists of the existence of an airport shuttle and whether the hotel is within walking distance of the competition buildings.
  • Availability of Internet connectivity in stat rooms
  • General price level of associated flights, hotel rooms, food, and other expenses that will be incurred by teams and staff.

NAQT does not expect a host bid to be ideal in every particular; schools interested in hosting that cannot meet every requirement are encouraged to contact NAQT to discuss ways in which the differences could be ameliorated.

The application to host must be made by two team members (or one coach/advisor) who plan on remaining with the host institution throughout the 2009-2010 competition year and who intend to take an active role in the planning and execution of the event. NAQT is happy to consider joint bids from nearby institutions, but will require the designation of a "principal host" that, ultimately, will be reponsible for ensuring that hosting responsibilities are fulfilled.

The institution must provide postal, phone, and e-mail contact information for the representatives (faculty or student) who will be involved with running the tournament.

Unlike the Sectional Tournaments which are run primarily by the hosts, the ICT is directed by NAQT personnel with the assistance of the host club and institution.

Hosting the ICT does not provide the host with an automatic berth in the tournament.

The host may expect a combined Division I and Division II field size of between 64 and 72 teams and should be prepared to run 32 to 36 rooms simultaneously. The host club or institution will receive $20 per team (Division I or Division II) in attendance. In addition, the host club will receive $75 for each trained staff member (moderator or scorekeeper) that commits a month in advance (up to a maximum of 30 additional staff for $2,250). Note that NAQT does not reimburse the travel or lodging expenses of host staff.

The host must be able to provide an auditorium near the game rooms suitable for the initial meeting (seating at least 350 people) and three large rooms suitable for finals (which might also be regular game rooms). If the tournament remains a Friday/Saturday affair, those rooms would be needed from 4:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. on Friday and from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Saturday respectively.

The host club or institution will be expected to deal with reserving game rooms, assisting teams to and from the game area, helping with publicity, providing information on nearby restaurants and attractions, setting up the game rooms and computer equipment, identifying local moderators and scorekeepers, placing signs on campus to direct teams during the event, and other tasks necessary to the running of a smooth tournament.

NAQT will be posting summaries of ICT bids on its website.

If you are interested in submitting a bid and have additional questions, do not hesitate to contact NAQT at hosting@naqt.com.
